2014 WMAIA + WMBSLA Honor Award

KRA, with Jansen + Tsai (broadcast consultant) and Cavanaugh Tocci Associates, Inc., (acoustical consultant), designed the new home of New England Public Radio. The project was a gut rehab of 17,000 square feet on two levels in the Fuller Block, a National Historic Landmark building in Springfield, MA. The broadcast area includes studio/control room suites, interview booths, and a 500-square-foot broadcast and server equipment space.

Through context-inspired materiality and juxtaposition of form, material, and texture, the project carefully establishes relationships between multiple contexts: campus and downtown, old and new, traditional and modern.

2012 WMAIA Merit Award

Sip encourages customers to engage their "slow-coffee" brewing process. Counter seats allow for interaction with the barista; banquettes at the historic storefront windows create places to congregate in the light; fireplace seating inspires a moment to relax.  Birch trees, beautiful in their simplicity, are referenced in the graphics, fireplace, and plywood of the furniture and displays.

Originally constructed around 1880, the house was in need of significant repairs and upgrades. The renovated project includes an ample front porch that enhances the form of the original house as well as additions to the rear that expand dining and kitchen areas.
