Unitarian Universalist Society of Amherst
This project consists of an addition and renovations to the Society’s historical meeting house located in downtown Amherst. The addition, which doubles the size of the existing building, includes a new large function room, a commercial kitchen, classrooms, offices and accessible toilets. Renovations to the existing structure include the addition of a new elevator, a new accessible entrance, mechanical and electrical upgrades and building envelope improvements such as a new roof, new windows and insulation.
The congregation was dedicated to making both the old and new buildings as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible. The addition is well insulated and airtight. Items such as triple- glazed windows and LED lighting were installed throughout the project to reduce the projects carbon footprint. Photovoltaic panels mounted on the roof are used to generate power on site.
