James is fascinated by the bridge between the art and science of architectural design. In his youth he built a variety of small spaces, centered around a connection to the natural environment which he has maintained throughout his career. Inspired by these experiences, he studied architecture and engineering at UMass Amherst (B.A. in Architecture & Design) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Masters in Architecture, focusing on Robotic and Digital Fabrication). He spent a summer as an artist-in-residence in Tuscany, through a grant from Autodesk and RPI, programming robots to carve abstract marble sculptures which he then hand-finished.
James has worked at KRA since 2021; previously he was employed at Centerbrook Architects & Planners. He enjoys working on residential projects, helping clients improve their lives through tailoring their surroundings. He has worked on designs for plant-growing operations, and is intrigued by coordinating architectural, scientific, and mechanical elements so that plants can thrive.
James’ interest in growing plants is evident at home, where he enthusiastically tends a vegetable garden. Originally from Western Massachusetts, he now lives in West Springfield with his wife, their 3 Siberian huskies, a parrot, and a flock of chickens.
