A view from above during construction at the Emily Dickinson Homestead in Amherst. This in-kind cedar roof replacement was carefully designed to preserve the historic appearance and character of the property while improving the roof’s long-term durability.
The work required close attention to the Homestead’s historic materials and architectural details, including its cedar shingles, chimneys, cupola, flashing, gutters, and surrounding building fabric.
We’re grateful to be part of preserving this important piece of Amherst history for generations to come!

Throughout New England in the early 20th century, a vernacular style known as “gablefront” was developed with roots in the American Greek and Gothic Revivals. Found throughout Massachusetts mill towns, the gablefront style offered modest dwellings for the working class and served as the ideal starting point for this ADU concept, perfectly suited for constrained sites without sacrificing character or presence.
The “Gablefront Cottage” ADU uses simplicity to achieve cost effectiveness, sustainability, and universal design principles while remaining adaptable to a client’s needs. The featured 1.5-story loft variation is just under 900 square feet and can be modified into a single-story one-bedroom unit, with the kitchen and bathroom designed to be built or adapted for full accessibility.
Designed by Andrew Bagge, AIA, Senior Architect in our office, for the 2026 Massachusetts ADU Challenge.
Well done Andrew!

This complete renovation brings new life to the Armour Building, introducing a modern office space, a future restaurant, and an accessible terrace set to anchor the dining experience.
Original brickwork and painted signage were preserved and celebrated, with thoughtful interior updates layered in to support the building’s next chapter.
Rooted in place, open to possibility!
