Thom’s first job – in a bicycle shop- ingrained in him the connection between materials, function, and aesthetics; his undergraduate education at St. John’s College (Annapolis and Santa Fe) inculcated the conviction that place-making is a crucial branch of the liberal arts.

After graduating from college, Thom spent 12 years as a carpenter in Santa Fe, Marblehead, and the Pioneer Valley. He worked as a Lead Carpenter on several full-scale gut remodels, deep energy retrofits, and LEED projects. Working on historical buildings and in historical communities has left Thom with a deep consciousness of the craftsmanship and values that drive traditional and vernacular building, and his designs seek to bring the best elements of the past forward into the present.

Thom earned his MArch from The University of Massachusetts in 2013, and he can still be found out on his bike – racing Cat 3 in road and cyclocross or headed to ice-cream with his two daughters on their trandom bicycle.
